When Is The Right Time To Promote Youth?

Since then we have seen Nathan Patterson start against Stranraer while Kai Kennedy came off the bench late on something that pleased me greatly given all the hard work they had put in just to get that chance.

Going into further detail with some players we have Nathan Patterson a very talented right back who the club have recently given a new contract to as many other clubs were interested in signing him with his contract due to run out in the summer. Clearly James Tavernier is the 1st choice right back but the question could be asked is Nathan now ready to be the backup to Tavernier? We currently have Jon Flanagan & Matt Polster in that position but come the summer could we see that change with Nathan being a regular within the 1st team squad?

Next we have James Maxwell someone the club brought in on trial a few years ago after Forth Valley decided to close down & at that time James played as a winger but over the last year we have seen him move back to left back a position he looks very natural in & again was given a new deal recently to keep him at the club till 2022. Croatian international Borna Barisic is the man in possession of the left back jersey but with Jon Flanagan & Andy Halliday out of contract in the summer will that be the time for James to move into the 1st team squad?

Kai Kennedy is the youngest of the group we will be speaking about but one of the most creative players we have at the academy something you can’t have enough of in the 1st team & with Ryan Kent & Joe Aribo being the main creative players we have at present when will we see Kai make that step up permanently?

Kai has been linked with some top European teams over the last year but is still under contract till 2021 with the club hoping to tie him down to an extended deal over the coming months

Dapo Mebude is the last player we will be speaking about but someone who has the potential to be a high class player for Rangers & it seems he has a very good relationship with Jermain Defoe someone he’s trying to get into the 1st team ahead of in the not to distant future.

Dapo has already made his 1st team debut against Kilmarnock last season but at present has had to make do with being part of the development squad this season but with Alfredo Morelos & Jermain Defoe the main strikers ahead of him when will be the right time for Dapo to make that next step in his career?

Other players of note that we should mention are Josh McPake, Stephen Kelly & Robby McCrorie all three of these players have the ability to make that next step up into the Rangers 1st team over the next 12 months.

Would like to finish off by saying good luck to all the players that have left the academy over the last few month it’s never nice to see players leaving the club but at times it’s needed for them to play regularly elsewhere.

  1. That training centre was built as a first class facility by David Murray how long ago now 4th July 2001 at 14 million back then was one of the best in Britain. How many players have came through it None I can remember to go on and make a impact So is it down to the Scottish scouts As when I was young I got knocked back Told I was a bit small Wanted big guys and 20 years on seems the same with my boy. Time to bring some players in if they can hack it But a no for sure Stephen Gerrard will be looking to the youth as that’s going to be the future of our club.
